Behaviour Therapy is a form of therapy, which focuses on modifying faculty behaviour which brings about basic changes in personality.
Instead of probing the unconscious or exploring the clients/ students thoughts and feelings, behaviour therapy tries to eliminate the symptoms and modify ineffective or maladaptive pattern by applying basic learning techniques.
The main goal of behaviour therapy is to reinforce desirable behaviour and eliminate unwanted or maladaptive ones.
Behaviour therapy had been introduced at Swabodhini, as a specialised service for our students, wherein, students are thoroughly examined by the therapist. The maladaptive behaviour of a child affects not only their personality but their process of learning too.
Learned behaviour pattern becomes a waste or disappears if it’s not reinforced.
In behaviour therapy to eliminate the smaladaptive behaviour, one has to remove reinforcement for it.
Behaviour therapy is a comprehensive program that, deals with teaching complex programs and social skills like, recognizing facial expressions and nonverbal behaviour of others, development of co-operative and social behaviour, etc.
If behaviour therapy is given to a child consistently over a period of time, many of the issues like (impulsiveness, tantrums, aggressive and destructive behaviour, immediate need gratification, certain odd and repetitive behaviours, etc.) that act as an obstacle in the learning process of the child can be easily dealt with and controlled using the above mentioned techniques.
It has been proved through extensive research that, only medication therapy alone cannot tap certain problematic behaviours, it is the combined effect of medication and behaviour therapy that bring improvement in ones behaviour.
